4D Ultrasound tests

During pregnancy, the most important concern the parents-to-be are preoccupied with is the foetus’s health, i.e. the desire that a healthy baby be born. The recommended screening tests during prenatal care are aimed at preventing conditions that may endanger a pregnancy. It should be noted, however, that malformations cannot be detected with absolute certainty, but their incidence can be reduced. Ultrasound (US) tests, recommended at certain times during pregnancy, play a leading role among those tests. The classical “pattern” is for 4+1 ultrasound tests during pregnancy.

Recommended ultrasound tests during pregnancy

On the first presentation at the clinic, we perform test “0”, also known as the early pregnancy test. It is aimed at diagnosing the pregnancy, finding out about its location (intrauterine or ectopic), detecting potential pathologies occurring in early pregnancy or affecting the minor pelvis and, also, determining the age of the pregnancy. US test I, due in week 12, is done to recognize symptoms of possible malformations and chromosomal anomalies and, again, determine the age of the pregnancy. In week 18, US test II is performed in the possession of the results of biochemical markers, and it is to reveal symptoms of malformations and chromosomal disorders. This test can also inform us about placentation (position of the placenta) and its possible disorders. The age of the pregnancy is also determined at this time. Next is US test III, in week 32, to detect expecting mothers with risk factors requiring closer monitoring and/or Doppler tests. Perinatal US test IV is to screen delivery-related risk factors and allow us to draw a plan of how to conduct labour and delivery.

2D, 3D and 4D ultrasound tests

A traditional, 2D ultrasound image can only show a single section of the foetal body. If these waves are used in combination with modern computer technologies, and the sets of pictures are aligned, a 3D image is obtained. Time is the fourth dimension (4D); a movie is made using images updated three to four times a second, and these motion pictures can show the baby’s movement, facial expressions and even its mood.

The diagnostic power of 4D ultrasound tests is outstanding compared to the traditional 2D US technique since the resolution of the 4D device is very high, which creates a much more enjoyable image of the baby. The more detailed an image the easier it is to spot a possible disorder, which, if any disorder is excluded, can reassure a family. At the same time, it is invaluable for an expecting mother to see in a clear and well defined image all the details her thoughts are focussed upon during pregnancy. The prospective father can also observe his offspring closely, which often has a positive effect on his relationship with the foetus and, later, the newborn child.

3D-4D sonography at the Nagyerdei Gynaecological and 4D Ultrasound Centre (NNC)

The clinic is equipped with a MEDISON SonoAce 8000 device, one of the latest high-tech equipment today.

The 4D ultrasound test consists of the following steps: First, we make the necessary measurements according to the protocol and issue an official document with the results. The specialist carrying out the test will answer the patient’s questions in detail. Next, it is “movie-time”, which is an unforgettable experience for both the expecting mom and the members of the family in her company. Even lay people can easily recognise the details in the image: the baby’s face, its hands and fingers, even its private parts. Furthermore, its movements are also clearly visible (it is sucking a finger, yawning or smiling, etc.), all on a large LCD screen. It is a very special feeling for the parents to see their child at this stage and it will definitely strengthen the parent-child relationship in the future. Finally, a DVD, recording the whole of the examination, and a photo of your choice will be provided in memory of these days.

Three and four dimensional images can be made at any time, but the best period is between weeks 24 and 32. The quantity of amniotic fluid, the size of the foetus and the “hardness” of its tissues allow the best images in this period. The tests performed at our clinic meet the requirements of the compulsory US tests during prenatal care, therefore care-providing obstetricians will also accept the results issued by NNC. Examinations are available on appointment. Anyone requesting a 4D ultrasound test at the Nagyerdei 4D Ultrasound Centre (NNC) will find that, compared to queuing up for examinations at a governmental health care facility, there is no waiting for hours and the examination itself is explained in a straightforward manner.
